Today was even more mellow than yesterday. At 9AM we drove 30 minutes away to Senang Hati ("Happy Hearts") an NGO which houses and is completely run by Balinese living with physical disabilities (polio, blindness, amputations due to accidents, deformities, etc). Their presentation was extremely short, so we had a tour of the vicinity. Twenty people currently live there free of charge, and they engage in various skill-building classes put on by the foundation such as computer classes, English lessons, tailoring, musical lessons, etc. This organization supports itself by the handicrafts that disabled people make, and there was even a store on the foundations grounds. Everyone there was extremely kind, and the best part was that a bunch of kids were running around and were adorable. Spontaneously, our visit turned into a mini concert/dance party--all the disabled peoples were drumming and teaching us to drum, and some people even started dancing (including my professor haha). It was a pretty fun time, and after lunch there we went back to the homestays. I stayed there from 3ish to 5, where I attempted to find people whom were already in town. My attempt failed, and I ended up walking around new areas of Ubud. It's absolutely beautiful, and the area I walked through around sunset was very quiet and isolated; surrounded by rice paddies, gardens, and the noises of roosters and frogs. Since I couldn't find anyone and was dying of thirst, I decided to have a snack and drink in a cute little cafe by myself to take advantage of the free wifi. It's very nice and calming to have a moment to myself doing my own thing, especially since class officially starts tomorrow! As I write this, I'm eating bruschetta watching the zillions of motorcycles drive by and eavesdropping on my fellow tourists' conversations; it's amazing how many tourists are here in Bali, from all over the world--I've heard Italian, French, Chinese, and Spanish all in one day! After hanging out at the homestay for a bit, a few girls and I headed off to a local bar/restaurant/lounge to watch the World Cup--Mexico vs Netherlands. The ENTIRE bar was team Netherlands, except us who were rooting for Mexico. It was a very close/exciting game, but we lost! We took a cab home after that and went to bed around 2
