We left Koh Samui at 6.30am for a long day of travelling to George Town. We caught a mini bus to the pier, followed by a boat journey to mainland Thailand and then a public bus from the port to Hat Yai which took about 5 hours. We then got a private bus for the hours journey to the boarder. Once we reached the boarder I went through first as I had been naughty and over stayed my visa by 2 days! I was sent into an office and had to fill in a form, pay my fine and got a naughty stamp in my passport, before being stamped out the country. After crossing the boarder in Malaysia (which included scanning our index fingures) we were back in the private bus for another couple of hours until we reached George Town. George Town is on the island of Penang, which to reach we had to cross the longest bridge in SE Asia.
We arrived late so dumped our things and headed out for dinner. We went to a food market where the middle was full of plastic tables and chairs and the outside is full of all different food stalls. You pick want you want, order it from the food stall, telling them your table number and they bring it over. I opted for Indian food, which was really cheap and tasty and dinner was accompanied by cheesy entertainment from a stage in the middle!
Over night it completely chucked it down and it was so heavy it kept waking me up. In the morning it was still raining but we had planned to go out with our tour leader on a 'heritage tour' (as it is a UNESCO world heritage site). As this was our only full day here we put on our rain coats and headed out, not long after it finally stopped and it was blue skys, sunshine and high temperatures! We walked around George Town for a good few hours visiting the City and Town Hall, the fort, St George's Church, Mosques and Little India. I really like George Town, it has so much character and some amazing architecture. After the tour had finished we headed to the chocolate factory where we got to try samples of all the different chocolates, teas and coffees. For lunch Kelly-Anne, Deb and I headed back to Little India and found a really nice vegetarian restaurant and then wondered round the shops. I ended up buying a sari, not that I need one, but the material was so lovely and it was so cheap, im sure I can put it to use somehow.
On our last evening in George the majority of the group headed out to dinner to the food market we had been to the previous night, before finding a bar for a few drinks. We ended up ordering a tower of cocktail for the girls and a tower of beer for the lads and as we could not find anywhere to do kareoke, ended up having a sing song in the bar (whilst getting some funny looks from other people sat in the bar)! A good night and end to our time in George Town, a place I would love to visit again.
