Our hotel, while very centrally located is a typical Paris room, fairly small and bathroom even smaller, the only problem is that it has no air conditioning and though we can open the windows the street noise is loud, the result one restless night, And today the plan was to go to the top of the tower, now I can tell you I like my feet planted firmly on the ground, I do not like heights, especially if there is no glass or walls around me and I am open to the elements, but as we were going to go up in the elevator, how hard can it be? Yep, eyes closed most of the way up, but we got there and what a view, stunning, all of Paris all around you, quite a few photo's later and the crowd was now starting to build up we went down to the next level, had croissants and coffee and headed down to ground level.
A fantastic experience, one I won't forget.
Next stop was the hop on hop off bus, and we did the complete circuit finally getting off at the Champs Élysées and going underground over to the Arc De Triomphe, also a beautiful monument, and where the unknown soldier is buried, you can go to the top of the building but I was not going to this time, and not only that but it was fascinating watching the cars, buses, bikes, come from all directions with what seemed to be no road rules whatsoever navigate around the circuit, how there is not an accident every few minutes defy's logic.
We then took a walk down the avenue just looking at the shops and watching the crowd, by this time it was getting very late so back on the bus and headed for our station and dropping in to a corner cafe for dinner and then back to the hotel.
Wednesday
Today the alarm was set for 6am, a bad nights sleep was had by both of us but we eventually got moving, to catch the 8.45 train to the Palace of Versailles arriving at the palace gates just before opening time, this place is impressive, with its huge black and golden entrance gates and all the gold work around the front entrance of the building, going through the rooms, some are plain but with such art works hanging that they don't need anything else, but then you come into the actual living quarters and then you have the ornate ceilings and furniture, this building was the palace of Louis X111, and was greatly enlarged by his son Louis X1V in 1661 and the work continued up to his death in 1715, and further apartments and additions were completed during the reign of Louis XV and XV1. And then in 1789 the monarchy left Versailles after the first days of the French Revolution, history lesson finished,
After going through the building we headed for the gardens and they are outstanding and a lot of them and spread far and wide, and as we wanted to see the recreational Palace called the Grand Trianon and the Palace of Marie Antoinnette plus the farm buildings, we came across some golf buggy's for hire, what a brilliant idea, so we hired one and after a lesson in road rules, like driving on the right side, we were on our way, now with these buggy's you get a map of where to go and if you deviate from the set route, like going down a wrong avenue the buggy automatically stops and you get a recorded voice telling you that you are in the wrong area, to reverse and go back to the correct route.
This is a huge estate and this was a great way of seeing it all, you can stop where ever you like and take your time, we were both impressed with Marie Antoinette's Palace, although not big only two stories tall, from here we walked the grounds to the farm buildings and unbelievably are in good condition, some restoration work is being carried out and you can't enter the buildings but the whole setting is beautiful.
Finally getting back to the main palace we then proceeded to walk the main gardens and yes they are exactly as you see in photo's, just so pristine, in line and colour co-ordinated, the lawns so intricately laid out in different patterns, fountains every where the eye could see and all set to a purpose.
Unbelievably we had spent all day here, there was so much to see, and I am so glad we took the time to enjoy the whole experience, one not to be missed.
