On our return from Taz, we opted to stay in St Kilda (the beach suburb of Melbourne). We also didn't appriciate the fact that it is Australia Day weekend and that almost everywhere was fully booked (and we had only booked 2 nights).Australia Day weekend wasn't as big an event than I thought it would - perhaps this might be due to the fact that the Aborigines call it Invasion Day, so celebrating it in a big way might be seen as a little un-PC these days! Anyway, there were some events happening in some of the parks and of course, it was a great excuse (if they ever needed one) for the Aussies to drink all day!The best thing was the fact that the Australian Open finals also fell on this weekend. We didn't have tickets of course, but we were able to watch both the women's and men's finals at Federation Square. For the women's there were only a few hundred people watching, but for the men's there were thousands - it was a great atmosphere and was most entertaining (helped by the fact that we managed to find a spot with a clear view of the big screen, right next to a temporary bar and a patio heater! Well, it was rather cold that night)!!!
