Since arriving in Oz it has done nothing but rain so we had to put our boat trip to Rotto on hold until Friday when the weather began to clear.
We were up early and made our way to Peter and Jo's boat which is moored at the Royal Perth Yacht Club on the Swan River. It was still pretty overcast and we both thought me might be in for a rough 12k journey over to Rottness Island. Once out at sea it was a little choppy but the cloud began to burn off and the sun started to come out. It only took us about an hour to get there, we moored up in Thompson Bay and then went ashore to see what was on offer on the Island itself.
Rotto is a lovely island with lots of clear blue bays and sandy white beaches, we walked around the East side of the island and even spotted whales just off the coast. We also got to meet the famous residents of Rottnest 'Quokkas'.
Back on the boat we spent the afternoon relaxing with the staple aussie wine, crackers and dip! Into the early evening we had a dolphin fishing around the side of the boat, the weather had cleared up and the bay was flat calm. We spent the evening back on the island having dinner and drinks at the pub!
It was a new experience for both of us spending the night on the boat and neither of us got that much sleep. Jo and Peter say it always take a few days to find your sea legs! But during the night the wind had picked up and the bay became a little choppy so by the morning and after our brunch we were both feeling a little sea sick.....And whats the best way to get rid of sea sickness? Than to take the rib boat (for those non boating people, a smaller speed/diving boat) out into the open ocean looking for signs of whales, dolphins and sharks!!
After returning to more calmer waters we explored the West side of the island, with more beautiful sandy beaches and clear blue waters perfect for diving and snorkerling. However, Ben and Peter said it was a bit too cold for them as the sun hadn't quite made it out... I reckon they were both just a bit nervous about the shark situation as it was only a few weeks ago when a diver was taken just off of Rottnest and the shark helicopter had circled us twice!
We arrived back at the Yacht club at about 3pm just as heavy cloud and rain had set in and had a few hours to relax before the big birthday surprise!!!!
