When I get to Vegas the first chip at the roulette table will be placed on 28 because thats my new lucky number. When we arrived at the wave lottery hut for the second time it was clear our odds were going to be longer.... There were double the amount of people to the previous day, so much so they sent all non group leaders out of the hut to reduce the numbers, but also to ramp up the tension.
Whilst Nikki was getting her breakfast the bingo balls were spun and somehow our number came up, it was an amazing feeling, what was even better was first telling Nikki that we hadn't won, having my fun, and only two minutes later telling her that we had.
We were still a bit in shock when we recieved our permits and secret map. Then the ranger told us about the possiblity of thunder storms and flash flooding which could cut the road off to the starting place for the hike. The rest of the day seemed to take forever, worrying if the weather would hold.
Luckily it did, and the next day we were up at 6am and on the road with clear skies ahead of us heading for Wirepass the start of the trailhead for 'The Wave'. Following our map we soon realised that they could have just written the map on the back of beer mat, because it was not that hard to find, just follow the footprints in the sand.....
After walking for about 3 miles we came to the bottom of the hill, a steep sandy scramble to the top led us to the entrance and our first glimpse of 'The Wave'. The Sun was just rising over the mountains so the light was perfect and the whole wave area turned a beautiful red, orange and yellow shade.
We began to explore and had quite a while with the place to ourselves before various other groups started arriving. The actual wave area is very large and once you reach the top and look over the valley you can start to see that the whole landscape is like it although, the wave is more of a sculpture than a rock formation the way it rolls and barrels is incredible.
The photos say more than I could, we are just very luck to have had the opportunity to have seen it and it has made this trip even more special.
