Ben and Marie's American Road Trip
It was another day of driving Route 66 on the agenda today, but that doesn't just mean driving, it means stopping and chatting. It's been great meeting so many people with so many different stories down the whole of the route so far. We were looking forward to it. The first stop after having a little look through the KOA shop, was the Gay Parita petrol station. The couple there were lovely, George and his wife were so nice, they gave us watermelon and offered us drinks. But we were ok, as we may or may not have had a McDonald's for breakfast. But we had a look around her fathers petrol station with some real antiques in there. Old cigarette dispensers, bottle machines and old signs and cans everywhere. They even had taken in some baby ducks and geese lately and they showed them to us. They were so amazing, so cute, and one had a little tuft on his head like a mini afro. After we managed to leave the babies alone, we spoke to George again before leaving. Once we had been given a few recommendations on a few places further down the road, we left. We went to an old abandoned ghost town in Spencer a few miles on, and then we went to Red Oak 2. Now this was a little village that a gentleman had constructed when everyone moved out of his local area. He bought the whole town and moved it and then renovated and restored it, thus allowing the town to live on, hence the name, Red Oak 2. Fascinating, if a little strange, but still fascinating. After this, we got going again and crossed over the border into Kansas, of which only 10 miles of Route 66 is actually there, but they definitely milked their 10 miles. Among it was Galena, a town with a replica of Mater in it from Cars and also murals and stores dedicated to the Mother Road, so naturally I was stopping frequently for photos. That evening, we arrived at our KOA that was next to a casino and we went out for Sonic for dinner, it was Tuesday, so half price cheeseburgers!! After that, we came back, hoping to stay in the car but the camp security told us we weren't allowed for some reason. Which really, really got to marie bless her. Anyway, once the tent was set up, we went to sleep.
