Ben and Marie's American Road Trip
We were set for Gallup today, a place that is somewhat dependant on Route 66 and the tourism that brings. Again, a Mexican themed city with the modern world barely touching some of the Route 66 stops along its main street. We got up and had our free breakfast, which was actually very good, for continental anyway. They had tea!! So naturally I had 3 cups, completely ignoring the possibility of needing to use a restroom multiple times. I had waffles and Cinnarolls and Marie had some porridge. Obviously I went for the healthy option. After that, we sat in the room for a little while to let it settle and then left for Gallup. It was a drive through rural New Mexico and the landscape was enchanting, the red sands, the high cliffs and the stacked rocks all made it a really nice place to drive through. Plus, on Route 66, the roads were winding swept through the rocks and cliff faces. It was welcome after a hectic drive through Albuquerque, where there was road work for miles upon miles. When we arrived in Gallup we were warned against picking up hitchhikers, I mean we didn't have the space in the car anyway with the bed set up, so it would've been difficult. We were driving right through the main part of Gallup first to get to our hotel. It was a budget inn and there was no camping options around, it was fairly nice to be fair. Then we set about deciding on dinner plans, and we thought we would go to a little cafe/diner that had been in the community for many years. Jerry's Cafe. It was a lovely little cafe with great service and lovely people and we were served almost straight away. The food was great, I had a bacon and cheese burger and Marie had a chicken burger. We thoroughly enjoyed it, after that we felt it necessary to stop at McDonald's on the way back for a mcflurry. After all, it was on the way. Once we got back, we chilled for a bit and then went to bed, onwards to Holbrook and the petrified forest tomorrow.
