We were setting off today for the Grand Canyon, we got up and got ready, not in hiking boots yet, but comfortable clothing and headed to Walmart for a healthy breakfast. Yoghurt and fruit, it was really good and made us feel slightly better about ourselves. Then we had the drive North through some really scenic views with trees everywhere. The weather was lovely and we were planning on heading to a campsite first because all the Grand Canyon sites were full. This one was a first come, first serve campsite and had no showers. But we could go one day without a shower. Real camping. We stopped to get petrol and I bought some m and ms for a snack when hiking, sugar helps. Duke of Edinburgh did teach me something. We arrived at the campsite and picked our spot, set the tent up and paid using our little envelope docket. Then we set off for the Grand Canyon, which has a little village before you enter the actual national park just below it, with food and hotels. After that you have to drive 6 miles through forest to get to the south rim. We arrived parked, and hiked a mile or so to the edge and the view blew me away. The canyon itself doesn't look real, it looks like a green screen background. We walked alongside it and went to the edge a number of times and it genuinely gave me butterflies. You fall, and you're dead, it's that simple. We took plenty of photos and walked right around the south rim to Mather Point where the view goes on for miles and miles on clear day. We were lucky, we could see as far as possible, and the canyon seemed to go on forever. We then got the shuttle bus back to car, which was now a few miles away, and then got a swift pint in the restaurant for refreshment before heading over to another view point further down the south rim. This was where the sun was starting to set and it made the view over the canyon all the more amazing. We walked around and took some more pictures, especially some for Marie and this seemingly endless portfolio she's planning. That's the only outcome I can fathom, judging by how many photos I've taken of her. Then we got ready to leave because we would be returning tomorrow, we headed black down towards the canyon village and even saw our first few elk on the side of the road!! Then we drove to Wendy's for dinner before going back to camp to brush our teeth outside the tent and go to sleep, we would be up early tomorrow to go hiking.
