Today we hired bikes and thought we would explore Hoi-An a bit more. The owner of our hostel, Steve, is English and showed us a good route to go on the map so we followed that. It took us through some villages where the first interesting thing we saw was a home-made gym! It had bamboo sticks with circular stones on the end which created a bench press, a smaller one of these which was a bar-bell, smaller version again which were dumb-bells, chin-up bars, and a bag of sand hanging up which was used as a punch bag. It looked like something out of The Flintstones, and we all had a little go on it!
We carried on going past lots of local houses, fishing boats, chickens, cows, dogs etc… until we reached the beach. It wasn't a good day for the beach as it was very windy and needless to say, it was empty but thought we would have a look. It was so windy Tim's hat blew straight off his head and he had to chase it down the beach! The waves were massive as well and you could hear them crashing from a distance!
Next we headed for a big Water Wheel which was made of bamboo and we were told was worth a look at. When we found it, it was not very big at all and the lady who owned the restaurant where the water wheel was told us she took the picture from low down to make it look bigger!!! After leaving here we biked past some people selling fresh seafood they had just caught, including crabs, squids, cockles etc.
We were hungry by this point so went looking for some food. We biked through some allotments growing pretty much any type of vegetable you can think of. It all looked so fresh and was laid out so neatly for miles and miles! The restaurant we found was called Baby Mustard and we had one of the nicest meals we've had… all the food here is so fresh and nice. The lady said she grew all the vegetables herself except tomatoes and onions.
That night we were very tired so had some dinner at the hostel and got an early night. An English film was on the TV in our room, Rush Hour, so we watched that until we fell asleep.
Our last day in Hoi-An we had to check out at 11am then left our bags with Steve at the hostel. We had to get our next sleeper-bus to Nha Trang at 5.30pm so just spent the day relaxing. First we went into town and had a look around the market. Ben bought some new socks and a tshirt, Lloyd and David bought some hippie trousers, and Tim got the brush he had been searching for because his hair is getting very long! We were all competing each other, haggling as much as we could and it is very easy to get things at a much lower price…. Even though everything is so cheap anyway!
We then had some lunch, and chilled at the hostel for a bit, playing pool and darts. Then we said bye to Steve and other workers at The Sleepy Gecko and made our way to the bus station….12hr journey coming up!
The bus was a bit nicer this time, it had leather reclining seats and even had WiFi! However it was nearly impossible for Tim and Lloyd to sleep. They were at the front and the bus driver beeped his horn every 5 secs ( this is what they do here...there are hardly any road laws and everyone drives pretty much how they want. So when you get near to someone else or are overtaking, undertaking etc. They will beep to let the other driver know they are there. And with so many people on the roads this beeping is basically constant! ) beepety beep beep beep beep beep!!! On top of this he was watching music videos on his phone really loudly, whilst driving, and having a fag every 15mins!! Ben and David were at the back of the bus so they got a bit of sleep!
Next stop….Nha Trang!......
