Today we were going to visit the famous temples which are here in Siem Reap and this is where we introduce you to Mr. Sam! When Lloyds friend from work - Ash - was in Cambodia, he met a really good Tuk Tuk driver called Mr Sam who he had recommended to us. Lloyd added him on Facebook and arranged for him to pick us up and take us to the temples. At 11am we walked outside the hostel and he was there waiting for us. Straight away he was a really nice guy and spoke amazing English. He said he was taught a tiny bit at school but picked it up just listening to people and being corrected by tourists etc. Sam isn't like most drivers who just take you place to place…. the service he gives is excellent too…. Taking us to the best places to eat, teaching us about how they live, the culture, explaining things along the way etc.
There were three temples to visit and there isn't much to write about them…. The pictures explain more. However, the first one Sam took us to he called it the '4 Faces' and had giant heads carved out of stone on it. It is very old so a lot of it has collapsed and deteriorated but you can still see a lot too. One of the most interesting things was that every inch of stone was patterned and had been carved on…. It must of taken so long to build - this was the same with all three temples.
Driving from temple to temple we saw lots of little monkeys running around, just on the grass by the side of the road. People were feeding them and playing with them, but we didn't really get a chance to stop. The next one was the temple which was used in the Lara Croft - Tomb Raider film. This was cool because we have all seen the film and played the PlayStation game when we were younger. You could really see the age of this temple, as there are huge trees growing over the top of it in places, with the roots covering walls and doorways. So when you think of how old the trees are, then the temple must be pretty old too!
Angkor Wat was the final temple we saw, which also happened to be the biggest temple in the world…. And it is huge!! It took a long while to walk around it… and because everything is so open in the grounds of the temples it was unbelievably hot - we must have drunk three large bottles of water each that day.
Sam took us back to the hostel and we arranged a time to get picked up the next day so we could see the floating village and the crocodile farm. Before he left he said, "Tomorrow after the tour, I will take you to my house so you can see how I live, my wife will cook you dinner and we have a few drinks". We straight away said yes… and were so happy he asked, because we had read about this on Ash's blog and hoped he would ask us too.
We were thankful to get in the pool after being so hot all day….and chilled with Rich, Sam, Jamie and a load of other travellers before going to Pub Street again that night.
