Today we drove to Valencia and camped opposite a beach in El Saler just south of the city. We spent the afternoon at the beach swimming and playing some beach tennis. When we got back, we noticed a camper parked 2 bays from us with a kiwi flag in the window so we went over the say hi, there were 2 kiwi guys travelling around Europe together, doing a similar route as us.. when we were chatting to them we also watched 2 wicked campers drive into the campsite, so we said hello to them too.Ben spent most of that night chatting to the 2 kiwi guys, while Bek took advantage of the rare chance to be on her own and chill out! The chance to chill out didn't last long though. We had been allocated to a parking space that was right next to the pool and this was the breeding round for thousands and thousands of mosquitoes! As soon as Ben opened the van door to get in and sleep for the night, he must have let in about 500 of the little b*****s, and we spent the rest of the night swatting them away from our faces and bodies, trying to chase them with the mini torch so we could squash them and try and get a decent night's sleep. We eventually fell asleep, exhausted from all the swatting, but could still hear them buzzing around, when we woke up the next day; we were both covered in bites.Bek counted over hundred on her body.As soon as we moved to sit up in bed, so many flew out from hiding within our covers, the curtains and from our own pyjamas!
The next day, apart from sightseeing in Valencia, we drove to the nearest sports/camping store and bought citronella coils and a mosquito net to put over our bed at night. We walked around Valencia and saw the Cathedral, which is home to the apparent Holy Grail, which we were able t have a look at.We also checked out the bullring, the food markets which were great to walk through, even if it made us a little hungry (and poor Bek had to walk past the olive stalls without being able to taste a few samples!).just on the outskirts of the city is the new Science Museum and Oeanaquarium, which was walkd past and took a few photos.Back at the campsite that night all the locals that were lving at the campsite for the summer started to gather with table and chairs around the pool while the owners set up a sound system and started playing some music. It didn't start to get busy until about 9pm, but we thought we would join them, so we got a table together with the 2 kiwi guys, as well as a French couple that were camped next to us and set ourselves amongst all the locals and had a couple of drinks. One of the owners of the campsite, an elderly man walked past us with a massive cigar in his mouth, and we commented about the size of it, with big thumbs up.Straight away he offered us some and came back with a cigar the size of a large carrot, which all the boys got stuck into.Shared between 4 guys, it took the whole night to get through! That night, we had a much better night sleep safely tucked under the mossie net!
