Breakfast at 7.30am leave at 8.30, due to a miscommunication we all left at 9am. This being the biggest ride day. We all went to the end of the lake to get to the start of the Malojapass (1815m), with the tightest and most frequent hairpins anywhere. This is highest height-gain to distance ratio in all of Europe. At the top of the pass in the ski town of St Moritz we formed 2 groups as some of the riders were not going to take the Stelvio challenge.
We opted for the Stelvio surprise surprise. This involved 5 passes to get to it, all quite small in comparison. Starting with the Bernina, along the way we were meant to exit into the Livigno province, an independant province where one can buy duty free alocohol, cigarettes and food. We ended up at the end of the Bernina and went back up again to cross the border to Livigno. We lunched in Livigno, before heading on our way to get to the Stelvio, this involved the Eira, Foscagno and Bormio passes. Also brought some whisky and a big cigar for the celebration.
The Swiss side of the Stelvio involved a long climb through the pines tresse, followed by the side of the mountain ride, ending with 36 hair pins to the top. Given the apprehension and anticipation, it was exhiliriating to get to the top. Many shops for souveniers aimed at motor bikes, bicycles, hikers and cars, few purchases before the 48 hair pin decent. Needless to say David would do this again and again.
