We arrived into Paris in the afternoon and had to catch the metro to our hotel. Lucky for us it seemed to be peak hour on the train and we got up close and personal with a few paris locals as we wedged ourselves and our big packs into an impossibly full train. Gratefully we found our hotel fairly easily, which rarely happens, then set off to see our local sights on foot.
During our couple of days we managed to see all the major sights. Highlights would have been the Lourve, surprisingly not that busy, only a small crowd around the Mona Lisa etc; Eiffel Tower at night, we went during a thunder storm so only took 45 min to get up; watching the end of the Tour de France, caught the start of the parade by accident then hung around for 3 hours waiting for the riders, not so fun but good to say we were there.
I (Bec) was really looking forward to visiting the Palace of versailles but would suggest to anyone going to prebuy your tickets.... we turned up at 10am and it took 2 hours of waiting in the sun in 28 degree heat to finally get in. By then we were b*****ed and couldn't really care less about a palace that was jam packed with tourists, all of whom were touching the paintings and flashing away with their cameras despite the signs. With the thousands of people they push through each day it was disappointing to see it was having a detrimental effect on the palace.
Notre Dame aswell was a little disappointing, it had a couple of souvenir stands inside the church which just didn't seem quite right. On the other hand we did come across another amazing church St sulpice from the Da Vinci code fame and also the sacre coeur.
We also got to experience Paris prices too, the first day we went to get a coffee... 6 euro for 1 cappucino... ouch... and beer... more than double what we were used to paying in the other countries. Oh well... what can you do. After all it is Paris!
