Day 8
After leaving the volcano hotel we drove to Erculano parked and looked around Herculaneum after 45 minutes we got bored. (After all it was just stones.) Deciding to walk to the train station to get a bus to the car park on Vesuvius he started walking. However on the way we stumbled across a minibus with a sign for Vesuvius on the dashboard. Daddy negotiated a price and in we jumped with 15 OAPs. There were now 17 people on an 8 seater bus. Speaking to Salvatore (the driver) we discovered that it was a taxi and a local bus. We dropped off the geriatrics and we had the minibus to ourselves. He stopped and showed us the lava from the 1944 eruption. He then gave the police sweets and we were through we got to the car park and Salvatore gave us 1 hour and 40 minutes up Vesuvius. Although we could not see much because of the clouds the views into the volcano crater were amazing. Upon our return to the car park, we went into Salvatore's sons wine shop where there were 4 glasses of wine lined up for Daddy to try. We went down and he dropped us off next to the car park we were parked - after a large tip of €15 he gave us a light up pen for Ruby. We decided not to go to Pompeii. So we went to our next hotel in Rome. After taking advantage of the outdoor swimming pool, we headed for the Vatican City which was breathtaking. (This is after we got told off by a papal guard.) After walking to 4 restaurants which were all closed we got on the subway. Finding an Italian restaurant which was very well priced and the calzone was the best calzone I have ever had (that was my first!!!). Then soaking up the free minibar. And to bed.
