Foster to Wilson's Promontory to Cowes, Philips Island

We set off early for Wilson's Promontory National Park in dull cloudy weather, which did clear during the day. We were not expecting the amazing scenery as we drove into the Park, nor did we think we would see the Emus, Kangaroos, Wombats and Koalas that live there, and we didn't. However the landscape more than made up for the reticent wildlife; 50,000 hectares of spectacular granite formations, beautiful beaches and very varied vegetation. We walked all morning, about 6km, around the Tidal River boardwalk over the fragile wetland before climbing up to Pillar Point which is a huge granite outcrop with breathtaking views of the two beaches on either side and the offshore islands. We sat on the outcrop chatting to a fascinating local walker who knew so much about this area. We then walked up to the highest point between two the bays before looping around the headland and back to the car for a late lunch in a very brief and light shower of rain.
Our last stop was at one of the iconic locations at the Prom, Squeaky Beach, which has rounded fine quartz sand that literally 'squeaks' when you walk on it. The waves were crashing over enormous granite boulders at the edge of the beach and we were loath to leave this extraordinary place.

After an uneventful journey, following wood lorries and dairy tankers, we arrived in Cowes at a super guesthouse and explored this delightful seaside town and it's excellent Italian restaurant.
