Melbourne to Apollo Bay
Passing through Melbourne proved simple thanks to Louise's SatNav with only one very minor missed turning that was soon corrected. Good road then all the way to Torquay and the start of the Great Ocean Road. It really is a magnificent road with spectacular cliffs, rock formations and golden surf beaches; one of the most scenic drives we have ever experienced. Although we only travelled about half of the 250km of this road, it took much of the day as we explored the varied sights along this section, from lookouts and lighthouses to short coastal walks and pretty villages, but mostly just admiring the sheer beauty of the coastal scenery. What we had not known before was that the road was built by returning soldiers from World War 1 as a memorial to their fallen comrades and as a way of guaranteeing employment. The Memorial Arch dedicated to these brave men at the original start was simple but impressive. We were also amused at seeing seals playing in the surf by board surfers; but, most of all seeing Koalas in the wild.
Finished the day with some time on the beach enjoying the sun at Apollo Bay, This was the first day "on the road" that we have actually stopped on the beach despite looking at literary hundreds over the last few weeks.
