It was very cold overnight and we awoke to a clear but cold morning. We were to be given a tour of the canyon in a private shuttle. The leader did not take any chances with the weather, nearly zero with windchill, she handed out blankets to everyone to make sure we were not chilled. Even so we saw climbers on the sheer cliff faces. Some had apparently overnighted on the cliff face. There was a crisis the evening before as we heard the helicopter make a pick up whilst we had dinner. We learned that a climdber had an accident and had broken bones. The park was very picturesque and we could see why the Mormon settlers did not broadcast the canyon's location for so long. Zion Canyon is 15 miles long and 800 metres deep, made by the Virgin River cutting through red navajo sandstone. The lowest elevation is 1117 metres and the highest is 2660 metres. We saw evidence of early pueblan settlers in a granary/food storage under a rocky overhang which provided shelter. The guide suggested this was about 1100 years old
Leaving Zion we moved on to Las Vegas arriving mid afternoon. We decided to have an evening to ourselves so we just explored the area close to our hotel ( Cosmopolitan) including the Bellagio, Ceaser's Palace and Flamingo.
Apparently this was a termination point for a tour, up until now we did not realise that we had booked two short tours which were jouned together
