We finally made the trip off Koh Tao, and made it to Chumporn without any sickness, although we had to spend most of the morning arguing with the ferry staff, so that we didn't have to pay twice for our ticket! We had a short overnight stay in Chumporn until our transfer to Krabi early the next morning.
After our 4 hour minibus journey we were glad to arrive in Krabi to relax. We were pursuaded to stay in Ao Nang rather than Krabi town. It was a nice place and much more chilled out than most of the other mainland places we have stayed so far, and the beach was large and clean. We only had a one night stay but that was enough for Aimee to sqeeze plenty of time shopping. A couple of handbags later and we are on our way to Koh Phi Phi.
On our arrival it was clear that this was the Thailand we were waiting for. Beautiful beaches, picturesque islands and no bikes or taxis to dodge while strolling around. Although quite expensive by Thailand standards we stayed in a beach bungalow at the quieter part of Ton Sai Bay, away from the shops and bars. Our bag trolley picked up a little hitch hiker (a boy about 2), who also thought he had somewhere to stay that night in our hut. It's such a small island that you could easily walk around in half a day, although we rarely made it past the shops, bars and restaurants!
On our first full day we took a sunset longtail boat trip to the famous Maya Bay where the film The Beach was located. Firstly we stopped at Monkey Beach, and made some new friends. Monkeys, who we were told do not bite by some people and that they can attack you by others! We found they only attack when their water bottles were taken away! We also had some stop off's to snorkel over the sometimes very shallow reefs, and we have some scrapes to prove it. Hopefully we have some good shots of all the colouful fish, although we are yet to find anywhere to get our underwater camera film developed. Arriving at Maya Bay was an adventure in itself, crawling through small enclosed spaces in the rock and climbing some shaky looking wooden steps, but we made it without any mishaps or tantrums! :) Maya Bay itself was amazing, and close to the end of the trip almost deserted when the sun was fading, so we managed to get some great photos. We actually spent a little too long as our boat captain had to come looking for us.
The diving here is supposed to be good and it's quite cheap but due to the reduced visability at the moment, we decided to leave that until the Great Barrier Reef in Oz. We spent the rest of our stay enjoying the good weather on the beach, and the good fish restaurants on offer. We took a kayak out for the afternoon one day, but didn't get very far, all the laziness and junk food must be taking it's effect.
We are making the two hour boat trip to Phuket today and only have a couple of days there due to our visa's running out. We would definately have spent more time in this area if we could.
