Today I was all set to risk my neck in the pursuit for the adrenaline greatness. The incredible journey started with us all assembling at the information centre for our pick up.
We were escorted to the bungee headquarters where we had to sign some forms and we were also briefed. I enquired about my neck conditions but the staff in a true junkie seeker fashion, shrugged their shoulders and said I should go for it so I did.
Through some comical circumstances and misunderstandings, I found myself up for the great jump first. I will be jumping out from a cabin perched on the cliff downwards to a lake. After the fittings, I waddled to the edge un-steadily due to the thick ropes tied all around my ankles and posed for the camera. A staff said "Jump" and amazingly enough I didn't hesitated for a second and lurched myself towards the abyss.
I felt as I were the fastest thing on the earth as I zoomed towards a watery grave. I eventually came to rest inches away from the water. A flashback then occurred to me that while fitting me up, a staff indicated towards a bottle of water and I politely refused thinking that he was offering me a gulp from his bottle but I realised he actually were asking whether I wanted a dip in the lake!
After wobbling up the cliff with my legs shaking, Dominic and Ashley had their jumps but the girls opted for far more softer option of a swing. We then got a ride to a helicopter pad where we enjoyed far more scenic views and a chance to ease our hearts back to its normal rate. We even flew through a thick geothermal smoke. We landed near Hulka Falls, a venue for our third activity. We waited for Ashley and Dom to follow us because the helicopter was not big enough to accommodate all of us.
They eventually made their grand entrance to the admiring and envious looks of our fellow passengers on the boat. We all got our lifejackets on and clambered on the boat with our driver Steve. We whizzed through the river with an occasional daring 360 degrees spins. The first time we had a spin, someone nearly flew out of their seat which were amusing because she wasn't paying attention to Steve's signal that we were about to have a spin.
We eventually came to a rest near the majestic Hulka Falls and after taking photographs, we went back to the jetty with narrow near-miss incidents with the tree lining on the river and rocks floating in the river which Steve deliberately drove inches past to scare us all! We headed back to Info Centre for the day for the last activity- Skydiving.
We were driven to an airfield where we went through briefing which to my delight last only five minutes where it was decided that Ashley, Sara and I will be diving first because in the winter, they use a smaller aircraft due to the low demand in the winter. I met my diving master Brad Rock which came from South Africa originally and I was kitted up before heading for the plane for my date with destiny.
Weirdly enough I wasn't nervous at all while Ashley was a nervous wreck while Sara was slightly less nervous. To my sheer amusement Ashley had to go first followed by Sara while I was the last jumper. When it was my turn, the excitement crept up towards my veins as I inched towards the plane's door and Brad pushed me over and soaring towards Earth. At first I can't breathe during the lack of oxygen at the higher altitude level but eventually oxygen came flooding back into my lungs but my ear-drums started to explode with the pressure.
From last couple of sentences, you can be forgiven for thinking sky-diving is nothing but a torturous journey filled with pain but you can't be more wrong as I swooped downwards with glee, the views were amazing but I was really cold. Eventually Brad released the parachute up and I floated downwards at more leisurely pace before landing.
Charlene and Dom had their jump before we all gathered together to watch the DVD of our jump. Charlene and Dom's DVD was ruined because they jumped with a Japanese girl that kept shrieking and crying through the whole process while I found really hilarious.
We then went back to our motorhome and drove to Rotorura where we all were knocked out by the sulphur fumes. No, we just found a campsite and we took a moment to relax in free thermal pools and others also organised a surprise early birthday party for me to celebrate my 21st which was fun!
