We got up early to make a start on the mammoth 4 hours driving session. As we made our way through the mountains. We were constantly treated with stunning scenery. New Zealand must be an ultimate destination for geography lovers because everything I learnt in geography in my now distant school days, New Zealand got it. Mountains, dunes, earthquakes, levees, lakes, you name it and New Zealand will got it, even the sulphur geothermals.
On the route to Franz Josef, the roads was so quiet that during a stretch Charlene even let me drive for couple of minutes which was fun but I was nervous to be driving a huge vehicle! We eventual arrived in Franz Josef, to our disappointment, it was on the small side so we all assembled at skydiving centre only to be informed it was cancelled which we was already expecting it to be cancelled due to the cloudy weather.
We were advised to visit the famous Franz Josef Glacier so we went for a short walk to there which we all enjoyed after being stuck in a motorhome for so long. To get to the glacier, we had to walk through an empty lake which was cool. We also walked past a waterfall which we then behaved like the rioters in England by skipping rocks at the waterfall!
The glacier was majestic with a landslide of pure ice running down the valley separating two mountains. The landslide can expand or decrease in the size up to a metre per day. We went back and Charlene felt alert enough to drive on for a couple of hours which meant we finally got ahead of our schedule after falling badly behind after the airport fiasco.
We eventually parked in Greymouth. It was my turn to cook tonight but I was faced with two dilemmas. First, I never cooked mash and sausages with vegetables before and secondly I was cooking in a tiny kitchen with the motorhome sloping sideways. It wasn't long until I accidently spilled the frying pan on the floor so I now have to try to keep my balance on the slippery floor and trying not to slide backwards while cooking. I eventually came through one of the worst cooking experience and settled for the night.
