Friday night was capped by a cultural dinner/dance show. It featured a buffet and several different cultural dances from different regions in Peru. They often pulled up audience members to try the dances. Donato got pulled up once and did a wonderful job. He already knew the dance! Tim got pulled up twice and also loved it. You can so tell he's a theatre guy. Anglea got pulled up and was so shy and reserved but she got into it after a little bit. It was fun to see them enjoying themselves.
I still wasn't feeling very good during dinner. It was all I could do to keep my head up. All I ate was tamales and sprite. They showed the sheep sheering contest dance which I also saw on Jennifer Lopez' and Marc Anthony's show where they recruit people from South America with talent. The fire dance was neat. There were little scraps of paper attached to the booties of the dancers and the other dancer had to try to light it on fire. It was a sexually flirting dance. This is the one that both Tim and Angela danced to. They also did a day of the dead dance with electronic neon lights.
We finished the night with another OTR - our last one. The OTRs are very much like group therapy - addressing very intense topics and having difficult conversations. Since this was our last one, Caro brought up the idea of invisibility. It was a theme that had run through our trip overtly and subtly. People of color often feel invisible in the fact that they are outnumbered, they aren't as respected or heard, and they don't feel as valued because they are in the minority. It got me thinking how I often feel invisble too. It happens because I primarily live work and play in an environment where I am in the minority, in terms of my race, but I realized it's more so because I'm young, or a woman. I often have great ideas that people don't hear or give me credit for. So then I start to wonder how much of that is under my control and how I present myself to others, and how much of it is in the eye of the beholder.
Anndrea, Tim and Nehemiah went out that night with Carola. They had a good time. The rest of us said goodnight and went up to bed to get ready for our am adventure to Cuzco.
