Saturday 11th October and surprise....it's Bathurst weekend and of course we can't miss Bathurst so we headed for a van park in Texas. yes they do have a Texas in Australia. It sits right on the border of NSW and Queensland.
With Bathurst over, we headed across into NSW on Monday 13th October. We have been in Queensland for 4 months. How time flies when you're having fun. Anyway first stop is Tenterfield. This town is famous for its museum dedicated to Henry Parkes, the man who worked towards Federation of the States of Australia and also for a uniform standard gauge railway across the country. The museum is a credit to Tenterfield as it is extremely informative and a very comprehensive account of all the Prime Ministers of Australia.
Our next stop was at Glen Innis which is on the New England Highway. I have included some pictures of the buildings in Glen Innis. The architecture is fantastic.
When we arrived in Inverell we headed to the National Transport Museum and Tony was in his glory with some very well restored and very old vehicles from buses, bikes and cars. I have included some of the photos as well as the one that graces this blog page. I thought the sidecar on the bike might sway him away from putting a sidecar onto his bike at home, particularly the interesting passenger in the sidecar.
After a couple of cold and wet days in free camps we headed into the Moree Showgrounds for some power, water and warmth. Moree is interesting and we would like to come back here and explore the area.
Ever the intrepid free campers, we decided to stay in a truck bay on the Newell Highway just north Coonabarabran. Well.......we have stayed on the Stuart Highway in the Northern Territory and the Bruce Highway in Queensland but this really takes the cake for truck movement. We had the worst night's sleep we have had on the trip. We obviously didn't do enough homework on the Newell. We discovered when we consulted the road directory that it is the major highway between Brisbane and Melbourne and, as such, is the truckies highway. Well shattered, we headed to Tamworth for a little bit of that ole country hospitality. We arrived at the Airport free stop to be entertained by their Air and Flight show. We had parachute jumpers, stunt planes, sea planes and jets. It was a fantastic introduction to 3 glorious days in Tamworth. Disappointingly though, the Walk A Country Mile tour was closed for upgrade so another place we are coming back to. We met up with several single travellers who were also camped at the Airport free camp so lots of stories and good company over a wine or three.
Today we have moved onto a little town on the New England Highway called Wallabadah and the free camp has a memorial to the First Fleet. It lists all the passengers, crew and convicts on all the boats of both the First and Second fleet and yes......there were Scotts and Bryans. Don't know if they are ours but gave us something to look for. Have included some piccies in the album. We move onto the Hunter Valley tomorrow and head for the many wineries in that region. Will let you know in the next instalment what we find/taste.
