We arrived on Phi Phi after an interesting crossing. it wasn't particularly rough but every wave the boat touched sent a massive spray of water right over the boat so the front windows were completely covered making it seem a lot worse than it actually was... the boat was basically a scaled up longtail. after an hour an a half we arrived at Phi Phi just in time for a massive down pour! little did we know that this was going to last for 2 days solid!
When we booked the guest house in Krabi we were told it was just up the hill in between the the two beaches that join the islands and after a 20 minute walk in the rain we got to the reception of the place which looked really nice but all the huts were perched on the cliff face. The entrance to our place was up 100 stairs, you could see through gaps in the floor and when you stepped onto the balcony we both got a touch of vertigo! But i think we may well have had one of the best views on the island!
Luckily on the morning of my birthday we woke up to clear skies for the first time on the island (cant complain too much anyway as it the first real rain we had seen for nearly 2 months!). We spent the day relaxing by the guest house pool and making the most of the sunshine then out for a nice meal a few drinks and finished the night off at possibly the worst beach party i've ever been to... mainly because it was full of 18 to 20 year olds, which made me feel old, and was some of the cheesiest music i have heard since i went to platinum!! I had a good night though and was really suffering the next day which was a complete right off!
As we had decided that we would move to Phuket on June 21st we booked a trip to go cliff jumping, snorkelling with sharks and to go to Maya bay (the main beach from the film 'The beach') for the day before we left. Unfortunately as i got into the boat my bag slipped of my shoulder and a twisted awkwardly and hurt my back. Cliff jumping was out of the window but there was no way i was going to miss snorkelling with black tipped reef sharks! We were both a little nervous but excited at the same time when we got into the water but the guide was out in front of us on the hunt for the sharks so it felt fine. We seemed to be getting shallower on the reef which i thought was a bit strange as i was expecting 4 to 5 foot sharks but whe he pointed out in front of us in about 2 feet of water i spotted my first shark, just over 1ft!!! i did see one that was about 2 foot but after talking to the guide he told me that they only grow to about 2 and a half feet anyway!! from the look of the posters advertising the trip we were going to see real sharks not babies! gutted, but i got a few good photos and enjoyed getting back in the water to snorkel. The next stop was Maya bay, absolutely stunning! an enclosed bay with beautiful aquamarine water and golden sand. we had time for a swim in the 28 degree water then were due to watch the sun set from another point but as my back was knackered we decided to head back so i could get some pain killers.
Unfortunately for wendy the next morning my back had practically seized up and i realised i had trapped a nerve so it was down to Wendy to carry the backpacks down to reception so that we could get the porters to transport us and our bags down to the ferry to Phuket. As the boat we had arrived on wasnt all that great i wasn't expecting much for the trip to Phuket but we were both pleasantly surprised when we boarded what looked like a luxury ocean cruiser so the crossing to phuket was excellent!
