Spent today exploring the environs of Denmark. As it's on the coast ( Great Southern Ocean)we visited a few of the white sandy beaches as the sun was out and the temperature on the rise. There is a bay called 'Elephants Cove' near here, named because of the huge granite rock formations that occur on this coastline have formed into shapes that resemble a herd of elephants. They are a fantastic sight and sit in
a small lagoon keeping the sea temperature warm in a partially enclosed natural bay. Ideal for swimming as the water is crystal clear and the bottom is sandy.
Later we drove into the hills north of the town as there had been controlled burning of the forest leaf drop and undergrowth to help prevent the spread of any forest fires that might occur in the late summer months. The forest floor was still smouldering but no longer hazardous when we drove past. It was easy to see the reason why this action is taken as the burnt area had no dead leaves or grass left whereas across the wide road (which acts as a firebreak) the grass and leaf fall was very dry. The burning does not harm the trees and fresh green growth will soon reappear.
