So over trying to find photos to match the place.
Anyway - Saigon! We arrived here via Dalat, where we´d intended to spend a day or two visiting waterfalls and seeing the Central Highlands. Unfortunately, when we got there (after an admittedly stunning bus ride) it was POURING. It was kind of nice to see the rain and have cooler weather, but after an afternoon of wandering around and seeing the town, getting soaked and VERY cold, we decided to hop on the bus first thing in the morning to Saigon. Dalat was a nice stopover though - had a great meal in the evening and caught up on a few films...! (Well it was raining. A lot.)
So onto Saigon, where a good few of our friends from Nha Trang had gone already. We met up with Simon and Verns, which was great, and spent the first afternoon and evening celebrating meeting up with everybody over a few drinking games! A fantastic night. The next day we visited the Cu Chi tunnels, which was quite an experience. We had an impromptu tour from a very friendly Cu Chi guide, who showed us all the workings of the tunnel systems and intricacies of the American-traps with undisguised glee - it seems the past hasn´t exactly been laid to rest (and the great video we saw before heading down the tunnels only reinforced that!). When it came to going into the tunnels themselves - which had been specially widened for foreigners - I only made it about a metre in before deciding I was WAY too claustrophobic for it. Not for the likes of me! And I was quite happy about walking over to the exit and greeting the others as they emerged, blinking, sweaty and covered in earth! They reported back that it was well worth going through the system - if you can cope with the lack of space and light, go for it!
Then it was back to Saigon, booking our bus to Phnom Penh. Saigon´s a good city, it´s buzzing and fun, but at the end of the day it´s another city and we slightly feel like we´ve had our fill of Vietnam. Cambodia, however, is an experience I am really looking forward to - so leaving Saigon to move on there after only a couple of nights doesn´t feel too much like we´re missing out. Can´t believe we´ve only got a week and a half left out here - and a whole country to get through first!
