Pub Cubano
We got up and had breakfast and then really didnt do very much at all for most of the day! Pestered Matt on facebook about whether or not he is coming to Europe with us, checked a few bits on the internet and then decided we should really so something and so started practising salsa in the kind of common area in the hostel. It has a nice flat tiled floor and everyone was out so we were able to dance without disturbing people with our music or be in the way. The guy who owns the hostel amused himself watching for a while as did the few people who wandered through during the next couple of hours before we finally collapsed in a sweaty heap on the sofas. Here we stayed until it was time to think about dinner and went across to the shop and bought some pasta and a sauce as well as 2 avocados which were on offer that we had for a starter whilst waiting for the pasta to cook..nom nom nom!! After we'd cleaned up we got ready to go out as we'd found a place through a flyer at the hostel that said it had a live band that night and was a salsa bar called Pub Cubano which was free entry before 10pm. We arrived at about 9.30 and there were only a couple of people in there but we went in and got seated at a little table near the back as most of the others had reserved signs on them. Ordering a beer each (of which only 1 out of the 4 on the menu was available) we looked around and tried to decide what about the ultra modern place was in any way Cuban other than the name...I didn't even see Cuba Libres on the menu! For the next hour or more we had to listen to reggaeton type music as the place very slowly filled up but thankfully at nearly 11 we finally saw some people bringing instruments in and looked forward to hearing some salsa. As the band was setting up they played a few salsa tracks and we found a little space between the tables to dance, not a great sign...clearly this was one of those places where people watch the band instead of dance to it. When they finally came on at about midnight the place was packed and we despaired of being able to dance anywhere without constantly having to pull up short as people pushed their way past (mainly the miserable looking staff) not caring if they banged into you or not. To top it all the band were pretty crap, the lead singer was good but sounded a bit cabaret like, the 3 backing singers could barely string a note together and clearly had no idea of timing and lastly the levels were all wrong so all you could hear was the base. They played for about an hour and as they left the stage 2 girls wearing very little got up on the bar and started dancing to the clubbing music that now played across the speakers. After watching drunk people also pulled up on the bar to take part in a dance competition (who could grind the best supposedly) we decided to give up on any hope of more salsa and walked home in disgust....why doesn't anyone bloody well dance here in South America?!! Muttering and moaning on the walk back to the hostel we got in at about 2 and went to bed.
