We set off from Sydney for our couples of days in the blue mountains.
Our hostel here was the YHA and it was fantastic. As the weather was cold it was great to be able to sit in a great big lounge with a roaring fire. It was like a big country lodge and the staff were ace.
Katoomba itself looks awful as the train pulls in but as your walk away from the train station the town itself grows a little more appealing and begins to resemble a typical ski resort town.
The big draw here of course are the views over the blue mountains and to be able to see a landmark called the three sisters. Stunning I'm sure they are but we had no chance seeing them as every time we tried thick fog descended and we couldn't see a thing!
Katoomba has a great touristy train and cable car where you can get down to the valley floor. The train is definitely the most fun. It is the steepest railway in the world with a near vertical track. We got sat in on the top and just as the train is about to set off they play Indiana Jones music and the train starts its descent. Passing through tunnels and rainforest we felt like brave explorers as we faced straight down.
The walk at the bottom was interesting and with the rain beating down on us we had a thoroughly good time. The cable car ride back up was meant to give great views of the surrounding mountains including The Three Sisters. All our cable car pilot could offer was if you look out this window you would normally be able to see…… Still it was a great day.
With loads of great places to eat we did what any chav from the UK would do - got a Dominoes pizza take away and thoroughly loved it.
The next day whilst walking to another look out in a vain hope to catch a glimpse of The Three Sisters we had eggs thrown at us from a passing white car. Andrew B thought he'd been shot in the chest whilst Andrew D in the leg. So with egg dripping down our clothes, camera bag etc we carried on to the look out to watch more fog.
Katoomba was great and apart from the fog and eggs we had a great time and made a great couple of days trip from Sydney.
