Port Stephens was our first stop in our new campervan.
Two of our highlights come from here. The first was a day spent at sea whale watching. This was awesome and we were lucky to see Humpback whales surfacing and jumping out of the water. Dolphins also raced in front of our boat and it was fantastic to see them playing.
Our other highlight was sand boarding which is greaaaaaaaat. We went out into the middle of giant sand dunes and basically climbed to the top of one and rode a board all the way to the bottom and repeated it. As many times as our bodies would allow. Sand went everywhere, I think we can say that we did more ups and downs than anyone else on the dunes, with our leg muscles screaming for us to stop we called it a night and limped back to the van for what would turn out to be an interesting evening by anyone's standards.
That night which was our second night here everyone started leaving our ocean front campsite screaming that a Tsunami was coming. We stepped outside the van to watch the excitement with a level of confused and not quite knowing what to do. We checked on line and indeed there had been an earthquake off the coast of New Zealand which had triggered a Tsunami but the only information we could find was advising people to get out the sea. You may not of heard of this, as the Tsunami turned out to be about 2mm high and you really couldn't tell the difference when we along with many others at out camp ground checked the beach the next morning. We decided not to follow the crowds out the park as we really had no idea where to go so instead deciding to fall asleep. Maybe not the wisest planned but it seemed to work for us and luckily next morning everything was dry and we were ready to go!
We also took the opportunity of visiting the cinema whilst in Port Stephens which is something we hadn't really done since the Far East and as the latest Harry Potter had just come out decided to go watch that, great fun but perhaps not the world's greatest film.
It was after 4 nights in the Port that we packed our things and prepared ourselves for the long journey north.
