After our night on the cliff we were up and out early and heading towards slope point, after a quick stop here we carried on to the petrified forest. This was pretty cool, the tide was out so you could see all the petrified trees in the sand.
I'd walked on ahead and Casson had stopped to look at something. When he caught up with me he said he thought he'd spotted a yellow eyed penguin. They're quite rare but it was a known spot for them. As we walked back we went to see if it was still there, he'd only been looking at a carrier bag and some rope! Might need a trip to specsavers when we get home!
After here we went to cathedral cave, this was really nice, as the tide was out you could walk right through the caves. Next stop was nugget point, this was a nice walk up to a lighthouse and the rock formations in the sea looked like nuggets. The coastline here is pretty special.
Over the next few days we were making our way up to Kaikoura to go Whale watching so we decided to get a little bit further up the coast and head towards Brighton near Dunedin. I was driving and it was getting pretty dark, it was a really busy road and Terry was struggling so we were either being overtaken constantly or I had someone almost parked in Terry's boot! If that wasn't bad enough we ended up on the darkest, hilliest road ever, poor Terry was chugging up at about 15km hour, he was going so slowly we were in danger of rolling backwards .... no amount of "Terry" chanting was going to help us!
Eventually we got to the campsite, got settled in only to be moved on by the camp police as there were too many vehicles. It was about 9pm by this time so the last thing we wanted to do was find somewhere else to camp. Luckily there was somewhere else about 5 minutes down the road.
We went to bed only to be woken up about 2am with what sounded like a car heading straight for us .... it was the local boy racers wheel spinning right next to us and spraying the van with gravel! We were fast asleep so it made us jump out of our skin ... and it happened twice!
General points
1) We think we may have consumed our own body weight in tui's and speights since being here (beers!)
2) We absolutely love having the campervan, even if I do end up banging my head most days (at which point I generally say I hate it)
