We didn't really have much time in Dunedin so we decided to drive around the peninsula and check out a few sights like lovers leap before moving on. It was really nice there, great views. After the walk to lover's leap we sat at the top of the hill with a brew watching the clouds roll in. At one point it was a blue cloudless sky to our left and black thunderous clouds to our right.
That evening we made our way up the coast and stayed on the beach just outside Moeraki. We were up and out early as we wanted to see the Moeraki boulders at sunrise. The boulders are spherical rocks in the sea, there isn't a lot of information about them really but they're huge! We got there at about 6.30am and it was absolutely freezing and pitch black. Casson was there with his camera snapping away and I was thinking what the hell are we doing here at this time in the morning but as the sun began to rise I realised why we were there .... it was absolutely beautiful. Who would have thought some rocks could impress us so much!
Once the sun was up we went back to the van for a brew and breakfast and to get warm, we were freezing!!! Once we'd warmed up we headed back down to the beach to see the boulders in full daylight and with the tide out. Casson was jumping up on them and having his picture taken. I decided to get on one of the smaller ones but I hesitated before jumping and ended up with a soaking wet foot as I landed in the sea.
We carried on up the coast and stopped at lunchtime in a spot overlooking the beach. We had our final BBQ here, a full English whilst watching the surfers. It was one of the best BBQ's we'd had and afterwards we retired the fish smoker as we knew we wouldn't be having anymore .... bad times!
Next stop Kaikoura for whale watching .......
