Once we left Glacier Country we headed to Lake Wanaka, we got there late afternoon so we pulled up by the side of the Lake and sat there until the sun went down. The Lake is beautiful as is the town itself, it would have been nice to stay in town but we'd planned to do the Rob Roy Glacier walk the following morning so we needed to drive to a campsite a little bit closer to it.
The following morning we were up and out early at 7am to drive to the start of the walk which was about an hour away. The scenery along the way was breathtaking, we were surrounded by hills and mountains and were driving through farmland with loads of herds of different types of cattle.
We got to a sign which said that if we carried on we'd have to cross 9 Ford's, some of which could flood after heavy rain (er hello, we'd just had 4 days none stop rain), Casson just drove on regardless with no concern for Terry! To be fair, whilst they looked bad they were pretty easy to cross.
After about half an hour we came across a load of sheep in the road, as we drove along they all scurried out of the way, all but one. This one chose to walk right in front of the van at a snail's pace. We had our very own inbetweeners moment (think Jay and the squirrel), the sheep was completely mugging Casson off. He revved the engine, it didn't move, he beeped, it didn't move, it turned round and saw us and absolutely s*** itself and ran off. My guess is it wasn't mugging him off, more likely it was deaf!
We made it to the start of the hike, it was cold but bright, a really nice day for a walk. The whole way to the end of the walk we had the trail to ourselves, the views were amazing and it was totally worth doing. At the top we sat and had lunch with views of the Glacier and mountains around us.
Just before we got back to the van, out of nowhere Casson said "I don't remember turning the van lights off" We'd made this mistake quite a few times as there was no warning noises but never for this long. We were hoping for the best but he was right, he'd not turned them off and the battery was completely flat and we were stuck in the arse crack of nowhere! He had to trawl the carpark to see if anyone had jump leads. Luckily for us there was a guy there who was really prepared and had leads and was more than happy to help us out.
Next stop Arrowtown .....
General points
1) The things you don't tell your mum's until after the fact .... we were walking on trails where you had to keep walking and not stop at points as it was in a known avalanche path :-)
2) If we ever come to NZ again we will definitely bring camping equipment! There are some amazing walks here
