Well after having spent the day in Edmonton I now have my own opinion of the place and I didn't like it. We walked from the hostel to the Legislative building (we still don't know what it's for!) which is probably the only building worth seeing! That took us around 20-30 minutes to walk to. We then walked to the 'Art gallery of Alberta' which seemed to take forever to find and was a bit of a let down once there- the building looks rather impressive in photos but doesn't quite have the same effect in the flesh. The 2nd floor was closed as they are preparing for the Matisse exhibition which is in a week's time (little disappointed to have missed that) We saw Piranesi's exhibition of 'Piranesi's Prisons: Architecture of Mystery and Imagination', and Edward Burtynsky: Oil, which was pretty amazing, it had a really strong message behind it and what an incredible photographer!!
We decided we'd miss out on West Edmonton Mall which a lot of people say is the only thing to see in Edmonton. It actually has a water/theme park inside the mall! Neither of us were that fussed about seeing it and it was quite far out, so we made our way back to the hostel, to my relief! The whole time I was out today I felt on edge and tense. It was like I was holding my breath and I couldn't wait to get back to the hostel so I could feel like I could breathe again and relax a little. It reminded me a little of Gastown, but instead of looking at it from a distance we were in it! Not only that but I didn't feel personally like there was a whole lot to see or do.
We've been told by people that Calgary is the same but we are stopping off for one night to chill and stock up on supplies before we start our journey to Toronto which will take a little longer than 2 days on the coach!!
