Amy's travels
Greetings from Penang,
We have been here for two days and already KL seems a lifetime away.
Yesterday we explored Georgetown, the main town on the island. The temple of Kuan Yin (pictured) was overflowing with incense being offered to shrines inside by Chinese worshippers. You can buy large bundles of incense sticks and then you light them and place them in ront of the shrine representing your prayers. Georgetown is overflowing with temples and churches so we decided to take the free heritage tour shuttle bus to see as many aspossible. We also visited Fort Cornwallis - the fort built by British settlers when they founded the island as a port for the East India Company. It was so familiar compared to most of the architecture here - a little bit of Britain!
Today we got the public bus to the north of the island to Batu Frringhi (Foreigner's Rck) which turned out to be a beach resort (complete with Holiday Inn hotel) and nothing more. On the way back we stopped off at an attraction called the spice gardens which was a landscaped park growing spice plants (surprisingly!) with lots of walks and a little gift shop. We toured some of it but as there was impending rain so we came back and watched a film at our hostel this evening.
The rain has stopped now and we've just been out for 'wanton mee sup' as recommended by my flatmates - it is noodles and meat in a soup with chinese dumplings. Very nice :)
Tomorrow we're of to Penang Hill and the largest Buddhist temple in Asia, then getting a ferry to Langkawi on Saturday morning.
Hope you are all well,
Love Amy x x x
