Monday 30 November
We get up early and pack up and go down stairs and wait at reception for airport transfer. Thankfully the man is ready to leave before the time he specified yesterday and we head out. We wait at the end of the street while he gets the car. The sun is just rising and it's so pretty. At the airport we get straight in line to go through security and then to get our papers checked. It's such a short flight so we have lots of time in Athens airport. Malcolm looks into the flight some flight changes and buys some delicious Greek bread for breakfast. We have great trouble trying to get hold of our accommodation for tonight. They want to know when we will arrive, but have no email. In the end we buy a phone card and after many many tries get through. They inform Malcolm they can pick us up if we call before 5:30. Yay! I try and rest on the next flight to Rome. Travelling is actually pretty exhausting. When we arrive we have to catch a bus to the airport. We hurry to the phone and again have problems getting through. Eventually Malcolm gets through on Skype as the internet is better here in rome! They tell us now that they can't pick us up and tell Malcolm a bus to catch, and to ask for special drop off. It's very difficult to understand the words they say and which bus. We can't figure out which bus it is so decide to walk. Google shows a path 3.9km. We head out. Sometimes there is a path but mostly it's just walking on the main road verge. It's dark now too. We get to an overpass and wonder what to do. We walk right up to it behind the barrier and there is a large road sign with a walking person. We see a path across the bridge and head across. It goes for a long way but unfortunately the walking path ends before the overpass! What to do? We try to cross, but there are too many cars merging on the otherwise. There really isn't any option but to walk along the road and down the short on ramp and along to our accommodation. The road edging isn't kept well and thorny briars and reeds attack us as we rush by. Malcolm has his light on to hopefully warn oncoming cars. Thankfully there are two lanes and mostly only one lane of traffic unless someone is using the on ramp. We rush around the corner and off the road. Whew! It's a short walk to go. What an adventure. I think google needs to rethink it's route and the bridge path should not end into the road! We check in and I enjoy a lovely hot shower and then some more Greek bread. Malcolm is sorting out some flights. I hope we sleep well tonight.
