Wednesday 20th May
We wake early to be ready for our 6:45 pick up. We eat the remaining food and drink. It's not much: and when we go out to reception there is no breakfast bread out yet. We have to walk down the street to the 1st hostel (there are 3) as we didn't know we were going to be moved when we booked and we gave the tour group the 1st address. We get there and wait and wait and wait. It starts raining so we go inside. Malcolm goes back to the other hostel to check his email just in case we missed something. Nothing. We just keep waiting. About an hour later a taxi comes with the guide who reports he rang the hostel to let us know of lateness but no answer. Off we go to the tour offices, also at a hotel. After paying we wait. There is wifi. Without any greetings we are off in a van and we travel to a river port. We get on two boats and head across. In the middle where the two rivers meet we stop. They are both very distinctive. The black river is very acidic and keeps Mosquitos away. They continue separately, side by side without mixing for 7km. At the other side we get into two Volkswagen small cooper vans. We stop to view giant water-lilies. They have raised edges and look strong. We continue then head down a dirt road to a river where we take a long boat ride up the river. Some parts are very pretty, with a river weed carpet and purple petals on top.
We arrive at a lodge on the river. It's very hot and muggy. Occasionally cloud comes and there is a heavy shower. We have lunch of rice, beans veges and salad. There is free time until free and because our room is not yet ready I sleep in a hammock. Just before 3 our room is ready. We take two boats and go animal spotting. It's very hard to see much but the guides seem to have jungle eyes and we see birds, monkeys, a sloth and pink and grey dolphins. On the way back we stop to do some piranha fishing. I don't catch any but only some bites. Malcolm catches 2 white belly and the guide catches a red belly. Apparently there are 15 different types. And lots of different colours.
Once back we wait for it to get dark and then go Caiman spotting. I don't see any but the guide catches a baby and then we go back to the lodge for a talk. Dinner is supposed to be at 8pm so we go back to our room for a bit, but when we go back down just before 8 all the good is gone bar some rice and meat. Good thing I'm not too hungry. Looks like they don't prepare enough food. Not liking the lack of communication. Couldn't they have rung a bell to say dinner time?
At least the bed is nice.
