Our bus was for 9am up to Phnom Penh, however at 9.30 it still hadn't arrived so after a long discussion with the person we bought the ticket from we were told we had missed the bus?! We still don't really know how this happened as we arrived at the stop at 8.40 as we had been told and hadn't seen any buses drive by. They decided to let us travel on the 10am bus and from previous journeys in Aisa we knew the journey would take longer than the 4 hours they had told us. 6 hours later and we arrived in the Capital, Phnom Penh. The city was very manic with people and tuk tuks everywhere. We managed to get a taxi to our hostel and check in. To say we were excited when we realised we had air con would be an understatement! I think we both gave a scream of joy when we walked into a cold dorm. We spent the rest of the evening having a wander round, getting something to eat and then playing some cards in the hostel bar. We were getting up pretty early for our visit to the killing fields and S21 museum so an early night was in store. Friday morning started off with our visit to the killing fields. Before today both of us weren't that familiar with what had happened in Cambodia about 30 years ago, strange to think how not that long ago all of this happened. We had an audio tour around the fields and learnt so much. Although it was very upsetting listening to some of the survival stories and accounts from different people involved, it was so interesting and definitely made me look at Cambodia from a different perspective. The country is very run down with lots of poverty everywhere, but it also has its beautiful parts and we met some lovely people. Considering this conflict happened in the 70s it isn't surprising what the country is like at the moment. After a couple of hours listening to the audio tour we left to go to the S21 museum, which is where all the prisoners were sent to before the killing fields. Again a very traumatic and upsetting place, with pictures of the victims on the walls and other terrible things. The buildings still had the tiny cells that people were left in for weeks at at time and blood was stained on the floor and walls. Not very nice to say the least but again we learnt a lot. After our 2 visits we were feeling pretty low so grabbed something to eat and then relaxed in the hostel catching up with our diaries and reading. That evening we decided to take a visit to the night market which was situated along the river. Down by the riverside was beautiful and we had a wander around the market. We decided to sample some of the local food and for the first time did not enjoy it! We had a selection of foods but we think the salad had anchovies in and both if us bit into one and couldn't get rid of the taste! Definitely not a food ill be eating again!! So after a pretty unsuccessful dinner we munched on some lovely gelato and sat by the river. It was then time to head back to the hostel to pack and get ready for our early flight out of Cambodia and back to Thailand. Apart from me feeling pretty rubbish for a few days here I've really enjoyed Cambodia. It has been great to experience some more culture and see some fantastic things. Amy's thoughts were similar and although she found it quite sad there is a lot of history behind the country which was great to learn about. Next stop is Bangkok for a few hours and then off to our first island of Koh Tao! Lots of love Meg and Amy xxxx
