A minivan picked us up from Noosa transit station and we headed to Nomads to check in and dump our bags. We were hungry as it was dinner time by this point. After dinner we sat and chilled for a bit before heading to bed as my cold had started to get quite bad! The hostel was quite cool however the kitchen was rubbish, but the internet was free so we caught up with friends back home.
We found and fell in love with the free food shelf haha so we had a good breakfast that morning and we ended up bumping into Alice a friend we had made back in Byron Bay. We got ready and headed to the beach which was so busy due to the Easter school holidays! The sea is so warm in Queensland it's like a bath so Ed and I stayed in for so long floating on our backs!! We explored the posh town after our lounging day on the beach and headed back to shower and I needed to catch up on my diary! A couple were in our room and were heading to Fraser also tomorrow so we all headed to the meeting together where we had to watch a safety video and be taught how to act if a dingo tries to attack you!! Eeek! Anyways after we cooked and headed out to grab our goon and money for the two day trip and packed and headed to bed fairly early!!
On the 11th of April we were up at 6am to get ready and catch our bus to rainbow beach where Fraser Island tours depart. We were introduced to our group, there were 23 of us. It took 2 hours to get to the 4x4 rentals. Those who wanted to drive whilst on the island put their hands up and cars were decided. Luckily Ed and I were the only two willing to drive in our car which we were very excited about. There were four cars, we only had 5 passengers but the biggest car held 7! We were the car behind the tour leader so we had to ensure we did everything correctly so the cars behind didn't fall behind or get lost.
I drove first and we headed towards the car ferry which was scary to board. I drove through thick sand which was scary at first and felt I didn't have much control but it got easier over time. We were driving automatic cars which meant we didn't have much to think about. The island is beautiful with no roads just sand and off roading. I drove us all the way to where we would be staying for the evening through creeks, thick sand and dunes. Once we arrived we enjoyed lunch and then after it was Ed's turn to drive.
Ed drove us to the famous shipwreck that washed up on shore in the early 1900's and then we drove further to the amazing Eli creek. We were having so much fun with music on and using walky talkies to communicate between cars. Eli creek is a natural fresh water spring, we walked to the beginning and floated along, it was crystal clear. We even drank from it as it was freezing cold!!
Dingos turned up near the creek which at first scared me. They are the purest form of dingos left in Australia as they are unable to breed with anything else. They look like dogs but are very viscous we were told to kick sand in their faces and growl louder than them if they approach you, which luckily for me they didn't! After a sunbathe in the creek we then headed to lake wabi which we had to trek through sand dunes for 40 minutes to reach. It was tough work but so worth it!!
The lake is being taken over by sand dunes and only expected to be around for a maximum of 50 years!! The water was so fresh and filled with catfish and these little fish that snip your dead skin it felt funny at first but I sucked it up and saw it as a free pedicure!
When we got back to the cars our tour leader was chasing 6 dingos with a stick as they tried to attack him!! This scared me and I was first back in the jeep! We headed back to the accommodation which was similar to a hostel and chose to share with 2 other English we had got on so well with throughout the day. They were cousins and travelling the coast together. We all showered off the sand and started on the goon whilst enjoying a yummy BBQ altogether!! We then started to play drinking games which was so much fun. We clicked really well with 2 Canadians, 2 Danish and the 2 English and the night was history. We drank lots and played games on the beach before jumping in the pool late. It was so much fun!! The Danish couple had never tried goon and were a tad uncontrollable to which the rest of us found very amusing!! We weren't allowed in the sea surrounding Fraser as it was invested with sharks and jellyfish and major warnings signs to defer you!! We stayed up till late playing card games and eventually fell asleep!!
Te next day we were woken up around 7am to get ready and go enjoy breakfast!! I drove this morning which was extreme off roading I had so much fun and we made our way to beautiful lake Mckenzie! This lake is pure rain water that has gathered in a sand dune it's crystal clear and was just gorgeous considering how hot it has been!!! Ed then drove us to the centre of the Islands rainforest where we took a walk around. We then enjoyed lunch within the national park which was lovely. We were sad to say goodbye to the island and slowly made our way back to the mainland. We did some ridiculously high speeds which were fun and then caught the ferry back. We returned the cars and cleaned them out before jumping back onto the coach back to Noosa. We thanked our tour guide as once again he made our trip he was awesome fun and a great laugh.
We all slept on the way home and checked back into the hostel. We were all happy to get our clothes washed and jump in the shower and have a rest before we all met up again later for the after party where the hostel put on copious amounts of party food and alcohol for us!! We had another good night mingling and headed to bed fairly early as I had lost my voice and my cold had got pretty bad so I was hoping sleep would cure me. We said goodbye to everyone and spent the evening meeting our new roomies all of which were English!
On the 13th of April I got up and decided to go for a run as I felt so rubbish!! The cyclone had just hit cairns and we were expected to feel the backlash of the weather down South. It didn't take long and it chucked it down but we still decided to trek 12km around the national park which was quite fun but tiring. When we got back we showered and dried off. All our roomies were in the room as it was horrible weather to leave so we had a night together chilling and enjoyed a free BBQ the hostel put on inside the bar. Strangely we recognised a girl in our room and found out during the night we have a mutual friend from good old Bedford this world is so small!
The boys all headed to watch the football as it was apparently a big game and then us girls stayed up talking away.
The 14th (happy birthday Kate) was still a wet rainy day and we were warned via Facebook friends we had made on Fraser Island that they were stranded as roads were flooded to our next stop Airlie beach and buses were now cancelled. So we checked out and spent the rest of the day organising our next plans. Greyhound claimed buses were cancelled moved our bus to 2 days later so we were potentially going to miss our Whitsunday's tour without a refund. I rang again two hours later and the bus was back on but they had moved us so we had lost our place which I then had to work my magic and get us back again as it was $800 between us we were going to lose. Thankfully I managed to get our spots back on the bus and we boarded the coach at 5pm which was an overnight bus expected to take around 16 hours. Zzzzzz!!!
We were just thankful to be on the bus and slept most of the way!!
