Bamberg is an UNESCO world heritage town built on seven hills. It is located at the beginning of the 'Main-Danube Canal and has a river that runs through it separating the old town from the new town.
Our guide was a funny old fellow that seemed more concerned that we would not find our way home so had us in front of a street map repeating the names after him. We dawdled along so slowly that one of the ladies said we must be in the pink group (this was for the slow walkers group). Finally we made it to the cathedral and it looked lovely inside as the sun was streaming into the sanctuary - most of the churches we have seen are quite dark and gloomy inside. He pointed out a statue of the Bamberg rider which is supposedly the ideal age of man. Our guide then asked what the ideal age of man was and Brad answered 33. 'Ten points to you' said the guide (33 being the age of Jesus when he was crucified). I answered a question about something else and he decided I should be a Saint - St Amanda! By this time our group were in fits of giggles which was quite inappropriate inside a cathedral.
One interesting fact about Bamberg is where the Town Hall is built . The town hall (or Rat Haus as they are called in Germany) is built in the middle of the river because the Bishop would not let the city people have any land to build on but he did not control the air or water.
After visiting some rose gardens, Brad and I asked directions to take a photo of the town hall because apparently we were not visiting it. Seemed a bit strange to me because it is what you see of Bamberg on postcards.
Afterwards we had to try their speciality - a smoked beer. I didn't because I don't like beer but Brad said it was OK.
All aboard - tomorrow Nuremberg
