Alyson, Emily, Julie & Katie's Adventures
Katie: We woke up at 4:30am (yes, that's right!!!) in the pitch black to catch our jeep to the sand dunes. I luckily was put upfront (a benefit of being a 'large' person) whilst the others had to squeeze on the back bench, which was designed for 2 very small people. It was freezing cold, dark & for some reason smelt of Boneos (the dog food) but our jeep did have rather cool blue neon underlighting, boy racer style so at least we looked cool... kind of. We got to the sand dunes & were escorted by a small boy through trees up to the sand dunes... which we then had to climb ourselves. I thought I was going to die (again) - very hard work, but worth it to see the sunrise. We each got to have a go at sandsurfing, which basically involved throwing oneself head first (or feet first if you rather) down the sand dune on a piece of flat, bendy plastic board. Good fun though! We visited the red canyon, similar to the Grand Canyon but on the most miniture scale possible... only Emily & Julie managed to climb up to the top. Hard core. (Please refer to pictures!) Me & Alyson found ourselves to be rather amusing as we flashed the other 2 once they reached the top... they thought they were funny doing it back, until they realised nearly the whole of the east coast of Vietnam could witness this, including tourists on their way up and our jeep driver. He got far more than he bargained for.... no need to tip. We stopped by some yellow sand dunes where we were harrassed by small kids trying to sell postcards & various crap. We soon left. We arrived back by 9am... before our usual 'getting up' time!
We got the bus the next day to Saigon (or Ho Chi Minh City, whichever you prefer) and spent a good hour looking for somewhere to stay that would actually offer us 4 beds instead of 3 and a matress on the floor. We have found somewhere, you'll be glad to know. Tomorrow we're off to a waterpark for a day of fun in the sun, then the next day to the Viet Cong tunnels, and then Thursday making our way to Cambodia...via a slow boat, so don't be alarmed if it's a while before we update next. We're probably just lost on the Mekong Delta somewhere.
P.S We're avoiding chickens at all costs...
