Ali's Travels
13th May
Today was day of sight seeing around the city. We started off with a visit to the Museo Santuarios Andinos. This museum exhibits 'Juanita'the ice princess, the frozen body of an Inca Maiden sacrificed on the summit of Ampato over 500yrs ago. She was discovered by an american mountaineer/archaeologist Johan Reinhard, who climbed the summit which had been melted by recent eruptions of nearby Sabcayna volcano.
She had fallen from her tomb and was only discovered due to the quick thinking of Johan Reinhard who rolled rocks down from her tomb to see which direction they went in, to find her wrapped in her finely woven blankets.
Apparently the Incas, made sacrafices to the Gods whom they believed were the mountains and were usually virgin girls or boys (choosen at birth), no more than 12 - 14yrs old, they were walked to there finally resting place in a large ceremony, given a drug to make them drowsy and then hit over the head!!!
The musem was interesting, seeing all that they found at her tomb, ceramics, dolls and clothing they found her wrapped in, beautiful colours! She was in pretty go shape to, for a 500yr old!
In the afternoon we went to the Monasterio Santa Catalina, a working monastry! Founded in 1580 by a rich widow Maria de Guzman, who basically selected the nuns who came from the best Spanish families, who had to pay a dowry! It was always the second daughter who would automatically go into a nunnery!
The architecture was stunning, it was like a city within a city, tiny cobbled streets, court yards and bedrooms. Apparently it was a bit of a hedonistic place to live but in 1871 the Pope put a stop to it.
Late that afternoon, we went to the La Catedral, which domiates one side of the Plaza de Armas, built in 1656 its been dogged with fire and flattened in earthquakes, but it has been rebuilt and is one of less than 100 basilicas in the world that are entitled to display the Vatican flag. We didn't stay to long as the Cathedral is only open during prayer time.
