Early start this morning (4am) only to be picked up by a Kenyan taxi minibus with a guide called David. We were slightly alarmed when he lifted the roof and realised this was our safari vehicle for the day. Although 4wd was written on the side of the van, we were quickly informed when we became stuck in the overflowing Lake Nakura that this had been disabled and that we shouldn't worry about the water spraying in through floor of the drivers cab?!?!
What an absolutely amazing day though. By 12 o'clock we'd seen black and white rhino within touching distance along with flamingos, giraffe, buffalo, zebra, columbus monkeys and and and..
Even more amazing, was coming across a pride of lions hunting an aged buffalo on our way to lunch. They had been hunting and tiring it since the previous day and were still struggling. We sat and watched the two male lions for about an hour within five metres of the vehicle. It's very difficult when you see the injuries and how alone the animal is, not to feel sorry for its fate and the manner in which this is done.
Beautiful waterfall finished an incredible day with braaid chicken and drinks with the crew and camp owners.
What we learned - thank god Jenny had a rabies vaccination after her attempt to chase a vervet monkey away from lunch resulted in the monkey charging at her bearing it's teeth.
Do not keep any food in the tent. This includes the nuts that Jenny has accidentally left in my bag this evening of which I have only just been informed.
If you hear scratching outside the tent, remain inside and don't wake Jenny.
Lions are lazy.
Surprises today - how can we have done and seen so much and it's only day two?
An African taxi minibus with a good guide can make a great safari experience.
Goodluck can make some incredible food in the bush.
Stop whinging, survive the challenge, live your dream.
