Early start this morning, met the crew (Kanyo, Goodluck and Angelo) and our travel party of six. Ridiculously, one of the four (Eddie) has been working with Jen on her last two projects in London. Small small world. Exactly what Jen was hoping for, work chat immediately.
The truck is absolutely massive and far more comfortable and spacious than we expected. All of that camping crap that's been clogging up our bags finally has a place.
First stop was a giraffe sanctuary for some slobbery feeding and the option for a wee kiss. Given the length of their tongues and the quantity of their saliva landing at our feet, we decided that that was a photo opportunity we could miss. Such beautiful and graceful creatures. We weren't sure we wanted to go to this option, but it was amazing being so close to these tall giants.
After the giraffes, we popped to Sheldrick's Elephant Orphange and were there for their milk feeding. Elephants ranged from two months through to three years when they are rehabilitated back into to the wild. We'd have a lot more wonderful stories to share if we weren't so distracted by the ridiculous number of tourists. End of day, photo tally sits at 171.
Surprises today: warm showers, KFC lunch, Apple store, delicious food on the truck - cooked by Goodluck (what I think we need to survive this trip).
What we learnt today: Jenny can sleep through Kenyan roads (I.e anything) and that we're going to be left alone to camp in the Serengeti. Oh dear. Apparently you shouldn't stick your head out the tent if you hear lions outside your tent. That was helpful as was the tour guides anecdotes of prior clients they've lost to hippo attacks.
Update - woke up this morning to scratching thinking the guide was getting us up for our game drive. Actually it was four in the morning and it seems to have been an animal at our entrance whom I mistakenly thanked him and woke Jenny up. This resulted in a near melt down after the scratching continued. How will we cope being left alone camping in the Serengeti with the lions and hyenas?
