We flew in Kuala Lumpur on 1 July. We stayed in a hostel for the first time in several months, for three nights. It was evening when we arrived. We ended up just going out for a pizza. The city is absolutely massive and really busy. We saw the Petronas Towers, they were quite near our hostel. They looked pretty good all lit up at night. That evening we watched Wimbledon in the hostel before getting an early night, as we needed to get up early in the morning to go to the towers.
We got up the next day at 7.30am, and after a quick (free!) breakfast we got the monorail down to the Petronas Towers. Entrance is free but there are only a limited amount of tickets each day which is why we got there so early. After queuing for about half an hour we got tickets to go up at about 2.30pm.
With a few hours to kill we wondered round the massive mall under the towers and the nice park behind it. On the top floor is a science museum built by Petronas so we headed there for a few hours. As it was built by an oil company there were a lot of exhibits to shows kids how awesome oil is. There were a lot of interactive things to play around with though, so we were quite happy to muck around there for a couple of hours.
We headed down to the towers after that as it was time to go up. You can only go halfway up to the skybridge which is on the 40th floor out of 88. Before we went up they showed us this lame presentation about Petronas in 3D. Then we went up to the skybridge and admired the views for a bit before heading down. It was pretty good.
IN the evening we came back to the mall and ate in the food court before going to the cinema as it was really cheap. We saw Ice Age 3. It was actually not bad. We managed to get the last monorail home.
The next day we went to Aquarium. It was quite expensive but we'd heard it was really good so we decided to treat ourselves. They had cool touch pools we you could touch baby shark, crabs and sea slugs (gross). They also had a massive underwater tunnel bit with loads of fish, big sharks and stingrays swimming above. It was fun.
After that we went to a massive mall on the other side of town. It was about 10 floors high and even had an indoor theme park. This is where we got the fish foot massage. We had to stick our feet in a tank of fish and let themn nibble away at your feet. Its meant to get rid of dead skin or something. Anyway it didnt hurt but it felt really strange and I couldn't keep mine in for that long. It was funny and we kept laughing and annoying the people trying to get a relaxing massage in the salon. Well worth it though.
We headed to the cinema again that evening to see the worst film ever made Transformers. Seriously awful. It was also really long and we missed the last monorail and had to walk round for ages to find a taxi.
The next morning we checked out early to get the train to Singapore. It was the first train we had been on since Rome so it made a nice change. It was supposed to go at 8.30 but ended up being delayed for about an hour. The journey took about 8 hours and was fine. We had to stop and take our bags of to go through customs which took ages. We got to the hostel at night, and were in a ten bunk room.
Singapore seemed like a bit of a boring and rubbish place without much personality. We wandered round or hostel for a bit looking for something to eat but we ended up just buying sandwiches from the 7/11. We both felt a bit rubbish so we got an early night. We slept badly because the room had really cold airconditioning and they only gave you a tiny sheet that didnt even cover you. Had to get the sleeping bag out. Also its always a bit rubbish in a 10 bed with people coming and going, making noise and putting the light on. Annoying.
The next day was our only full day in Singapore and we went to the zoo. It was a good day out indeed. Highlights included the free-ranging orangutans (they could roam through the tress above the pathways), the white tigers, sun bears and of course the mouse deer. We also saw a rainforest show which was pretty good. It rained really heavily a couple of times and we had to seek shelter near the bears for ages. We spent the whole day there as it is pretty big. It is all really rainforesty and nice and they have lots of islands with monkeys on (they cant swim presumably?)
In the evening we ended up staying up late watching the Wimbledon final in the hostel. It went on for ages. They next day we had to check out at midday, but our flight wasnt until later on so we stayed in the hostel watching films. We got the monorail to the airport around five and flew overnight to Brisbane, Australia.
