The worst looking town I've seen so far, however this place is packed with history. It was thus appropriate to do a motorbike road trip to get to the tucked away bits.
The plain of Jars was really fascinating; fields of large jars that no one knows how they got there or why, guess it's a bit like Stone Henge. Paulette and I rented motorbikes; we passed through the old Capital Muang Khong where Paulette was low on fuel, my first experience of siphoning petrol.
We made our way on the 60km journey around windy mountain passes and passed many a rice field through tiny towns until I ran out of petrol (even after the siphoning). Good thing my bike ran out of fuel in front of a house which bizarrely had petrol in their shed...
...So on with the journey to the Budha cave which had no one manning it...we therefore did what any adventurous soul would do...explore the dark cave with an iPhone torch winding through passages which seem to go on forever. We made it back to Phansavanh just after nightfall.
Dinner was at a lovely bambolize restaurant. Played pool at the local CIA club which had 2 pool tables and lots of locals. Was good fun with a bit of local flavour.
