Our lunch stop today was Theipval. Whilst we had visited these sites last time we were here I felt the visitor centre shops were somewhat more commercial nowadays. Back in 2006 you would only find things like books on the Western Front and trench maps for the serious historian. Now however whilst there were still some books there didn't seem to be the other resources available. That said the cemeteries were as immaculate as ever. Theipval is the main British memorial on the Somme and was the object of the Ulster Division on the first day of the Somme battle. Like most of the cemeteries in the Somme the number of headstones are small and whilst the number of names of the missing on the memorials is huge, although with recent technologies some of the missing are being identified and you can see where their names have come of the memorials.
