First stop today is Bullecourt where we can follow the footsteps of one of Anita's relatives, Harold Francis Spruce who was killed at the first battle of Bullecourt. Harold is one of the thousands of fatalities during the First World War who have no know grave other than he is lying in the fields of the Somme. Whilst Harold's official records list him as missing in action after the battle, the Red Cross records suggest he may have been critically wounded during the battle and past back to the hospital at Dernancourt. If that was the case then he could be one of the unknown graves at the cemetery or may have been lost altogether during the German advance in 1918.
The first memorial is a simple cross in the fields and shows what an horrendous tasked faced Harold and his mates, basically crossing flat open ground to the rise dominated by the Germans. The main Bullecourt memorial is a little further along the road marked by the ubiquitous Digger statue and again there is a smaller memorial in the town itself, a simple bronze slouch hat.
