Next stop was one of the most significant sites for Australians on the Western Front - Pozieres. Whilst the legends of the ANZACs might have been formed at Galipolli, the sacrifices on the Western Front were far greater and their impact on the course of the war immensely important. The main sites here are the Windmill, the town itself and Gibraltar which is where the memorial for the First Division is situated. From here you can see the memorials at Thiepval and the Ulster Tower. Thiepval was the reason the Australians had to take Pozieres as the British hadn't managed to capture it during the first days of the Battle of the Somme and with the taking of Pozieres it was hoped that it could be surrounded and taken through the back door. Unfortunately, whilst the first stages of the Pozieres campaign were successful, holding the town and advancing further would be the biggest issues and cost thousands of Australian lives. Point to note was that under the Pozieres sign I found a German bullet casing, even after we had all walked past it to take photos.
