Aaron and Beckys Surfari!
The last week has been spent on the island of Lombok, to the east of Bali. The scenery was a lot more rugged and rocky with much less tourist development (none really).
We stayed in a pretty nice hotel, scoffing banana pancakes for breakfast, riding to the surf, very slowly, might I add on our newly acquired transport, a couple of mopeds. It was the only way to get around here other than by Cidomo, (horse and cart). Dont worry parents, we went very slow and there was no traffic on the roads..only children...oh, and goats, sheep, cows, dogs, dead Komodo dragons etc etc... The local Lombok kids would stand in the road and demand a hi five as we drove past. We stopped at a village called Mawun, where these kids went crazy when they saw us, not sure how many 'spaghetti' haired people they had seen before.. and demanded photographs and stickers!!!
We would get our local boat owner to take us out to the onshore waves of Grupuk every day whilst he either slept under a blanket for a couple of hours, or joined us in the surf and encouraged us to catch the big ones! To my amusement he was wearing a new pair of Gul boardies.
We met up with a couple of Ozzies and went to see the local wildlife. As the sun went down, it was rumored that a few bats left a cave and headed out into the night. We waited and waited, expecting to see 100 bats maybe, but as they all started flying out past our heads, there was millions of the things, all relieving themselves on our heads. Caps and sunglasses went on as they showered us with bat wee, or poo, or whatever it is they do. anyway, it was an experience and we all went back in need of a good wash!!
Spent a couple of nights on an island called Gili Trewangen, doing usual island stuff, snorkelling, seeing turtles, eating and cycling!
Off to Brisbane on the 16th (tomorrow) in search of some wheels and jobs and a hot shower.
