Today I woke up feeling a lot better, I think it was just an over night bug! Thankfully we took a jeep back to our hotel in Bikiner.
We arrived back at the hotel in Bikaner and freshened up before doing a walk into the old town. It was an interesting walk, I still haven’t got used to the fact that cows are strolling through the streets and that there is no form of traffic control.
After a half an hour walk, we arrived at the Junagarh Fort, this was a fort built between 1589 and 1593, it is one of the oldest forts in India and is owned by the Bikiner royal family. This was a beautiful fort in such a small town. After the fort we waited for our jeeps outside the fort. There was a very cute homeless little boy who linked onto my arm for about 5 minutes asking for food. They say in India you shouldn’t give any food or money to the homeless as they do not want to promote it. It was very sad.
We loaded into jeeps and stopped at a small home stay which had a cafe. There we all played games whilst waiting for our food. We all ordered pizza, so it took such a long time as they only had a clay oven which fitted one pizza in at a time! After we had all eaten half went back to the hotel and half braved it and went to the rat temple!
We arrived at the rat temple! It was the craziest thing I have ever seen. It was a bright pink building in a remote village. The Deshnoke rat temple was home to 20,000 rats. Rats in India are believed to be sacred, so all people take great care of them. When in the temple you should keep an eye out for a white rat as to said to be lucky!
Inside the temple there were rats everywhere you looked. There was a few milk dishes in the corners which the rats would drink from. We were all quite squeamish but everyone slowly got used to the buzz are building.
After the rat temple we all returned to the hotel as we all needed a good sleep after the desert.
